Facebook Reveals Video Chat

The new chat product, according to Facebook’s blog, will allow users to call their friends right from Facebook. The revamped chat system now includes a sidebar with “the people you message most.” It automatically appears when your browser is big enough.

Image via CrunchBaseGoogle is reportedly in talks to purchase Hulu, the online video site, according to the L.A. Times.
Hulu began to weigh options regarding a sale after an unsolicited offer last week, though it might not necessarily sell itself. It was earlier reported that Yahoo had approached Hulu, but that rumor has been all but discredited.
According to new sources, who claim to be "familiar with the situation," Hulu is now talking to Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. Hulu's financial advisers, Morgan Stanley and Guggenheim Partners, are setting up meetings with various companies in the tech, media and communications fields, the source also said.
Hulu lets users watch episodes from television shows currently airing, as well as older shows. The site also offers a premium service, Hulu Plus, that lets users watch a greater selection of programming with limited advertising. The site is projected to make $500 million in revenue for 2011, based on advertising and subscriptions.
Google already owns YouTube, the top online video destination in the country that boasts over 100 million unique visitors per month. YouTube has also launched a streaming rental service, which recently expanded to include over 3,000 more titles.

Russian spy caught at Micrsoft

Alexey Karetnikov, the 12th alleged member of a Russian spy ring operating in the U.S.,  was working for Microsoft as a software tester.

Supposedly, he might have been looking for vulnerable places in Windows or other Microsoft programmes. Dave Aitel, formerly of the National Security Agency and now a private researcher said that “Access to the vulnerabilities external or internal researchers find and are fixing is of key interest to a nation state looking to use those to penetrate into other places,”
However, the US Department of Homeland Security stated that Karetnikov did not have access to any sensitive information;
 According to Matthew Chandler, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security he was present in the United States in violation of immigration law and voluntarily agreed to deportation in lieu of further court proceedings, but criminal charges were filed against Karetnikov due to insufficient evidence.

America is freaking out! Microsoft gave its access code to Russia's secret service

Microsoft has given the Russian secret service access to its Windows 7 source code. Now, it seems to become a very sensible topic after the U.S. capture of 10 alleged Russian spies.

Access was given to Russia’s Federal’naya sluzhba bezopasnosti Rossiyskoy Federatsii (Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation). It is Russia’s agency for counterintelligence, counterterrorism, and surveillance - practically the main successor of the Soviet-era KGB.

This agreement is an extension of a previous one, signed in 2002 that gave the FSB access to the source codes for Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2000.

According to Vedomosti, the Russian newspaper which first broke the story, "Atlas will use the information to create cryptographic defenses for Microsoft's latest line of products, which will open them up for use by state agencies and services."

Well, no one doubts that Russia needs those codes. But why Microsoft gave them? The answer is simple. For Microsoft, it's good for business to expand cooperation with the government, whose contracts provide about 10% of the company's revenue in Russia. It's all about the money.
